8Boxes
8Boxes is a nation-to-nation, artist led, collaboration between all eight Arctic nations. Each country has identified a group of artists who are building relationships with local communities, businesses and government leaders, to realize the 8Boxes project and to connect the people of the Arctic.
8Boxes will connect citizens in the Arctic through “phone boxes” placed in a public plaza in a city in each nation. Each box will be designed by local artists to reflect the culture, history, and aesthetic of the hosting country. The boxes will have technologically compatible features to connect them to each other. The boxes will be inviting, welcoming citizens to enter and call another Arctic nation. People will connect in unexpected and exciting ways.
A growing web of connections is being spun by Arctic governments, universities, museums, and other institutions. Despite how much the living of our daily lives has in common, no initiatives of equivalent scope exist to connect the people of the Arctic – yet we share much in common. We share in the experience of environmental changes, limited infrastructure, rich indigenous histories and isolated economies. 8Boxes symbolizes the importance of Arctic connectivity to pool limited resources in addressing collective challenges and opportunities.
8Boxes, a simple yet powerful symbol and tool of connectivity, will capture and preserve the experiences of visitors from around the world whose lives are touched by the 8Boxes project.
